Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] penhaligonblue! :D

Oh, you're such a sweet, kind, lovely girl. I hope you will have the best of days years, and everything you wish for. :D

Okay. Am I the only one to find slightly ironic, not to say a contradiction in terms, that in order to bring people to save energy (which is a good and sensible thing to do), they're having lots of concerts all around the place? Because, I mean, big concerts are kind of an energy-hoover. Oh well.

And anyway, since I've broached the subject anyway, saving up is made of several simple, easy gestures - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you were already acquainted with a lot of them. Just in case you're not, I'm stating them anyway. And they help with the bills, which doesn't really hurt.

    Really simple good habits.

  1. We hate stand-by, the preciousssssssss.
Where by stand-by we mean the red light in the various electronic apparatuses - like television, for instance. You're not watching? Turn it off completely. You wouldn't believe it, but that red light sucks off a lot of energy.

  2. Remember to turn off the lights.
Easy and simple - just, you know, pay attention.

  3. Take care of your fridge!
Defrost it often, keep the coil clean and possibly not right against the wall. Your fridge will love you for it.

  4. Cover your pot.
When (if?) you're putting the water to boil, put the lid over the pot. It will boil a lot faster. Also, take care not to keep the flame so high that it's wider than the bottom of the pot - amazingly enough, that does not make the water boil faster.

  5. You're hot (in winter)?
Before opening the windows, set the radiator on a lower temperature.

  6. No drafts!
Try and fill the drafts in door and window frames with material that won't let air pass.

  7. No curtains in front of the radiators, though.
You can imagine the reason why.

  8. On the other hand, curtains in front of the various frames, windows, doors and all...
    ...create really handy interspaces.

  9. A special insulating and reflecting film put between the outer walls and the radiators -
    - helps as well.

  10. Try to use the car as little as possible,
and if you know people who usually go the same way as you, why not making arrangements with them?

That was taken from M'Illumino Di Meno, an initiative taken by one of my favorite radio shows (there's two of them, and both are on holiday for the summer. I'm feeling kind of bereft at the moment...). It's an Italian one, obviouslt enough. Anyway, for the last three years, they've been encouraging people to turn off every light and not-essential devices on the 16th of February. You wouldn't believe how many people (and various associations) have been joining in! Every year there's more. Isn't that nice?

ETA, by [livejournal.com profile] penhaligonblue:

    Good computer handling.

  • I know I'm not alone in that I spend much more time on the computer than I ought to, which, of course, is a big energy drain. One way to ease that effect is to change your computer's energy settings: set your computer to hibernate after 10 or 15 minutes of idle time (instructions here; most computers will allow you to have a different setting for watching movies), lower the brightness of your screen (I swear you don't notice the difference after a minute, and it's much better for your eyes), and get rid of the screensaver (they're unnecessary on newer computers). It's one of the easiest and least obtrusive enviro-friendly things you can do.

ETA: Okay. The latest news on the yahoo.it portal is that JKR cried for Harry Potter. I HOPE someone notify them of some other big news right now, because I'm coming very short of covering half the screen with my hand, the next time I have to check my yahoo email. God, there's so very little else that gets on my nerves like something of that kind...

If we get carted away from obscene behaviour in public, I dare say there might be... XD

But then I could offer an unguided tour in my brain and the policemen would run for their lifes. XP

Man are we a couple of weirdos...
