For the most part, this LJ has been for me a place to ramble in, talk nonsense, and just plain escapism. Every now and then, though, I need it to stop being so - and this might possibly be the most important of these occasions.

I need you - all of you - to do me a favor. Go to that website. Read what it has to say. Spread the word. And please, do it right now - especially if you're anything like me, telling yourself "oh, this sounds important, I'll save it and read it when I can give it more attention", and then I leave it be for months. I found out about this myself just a few days ago, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that reading that was remarkably close to getting a punch in the stomach. It's just-- thinking that people allowed for THAT to happen makes me the angriest that I've been in a long, long time.

I am sure there are much better ways to promote the website - scratch that, I know there are - and I'm possibly making kind of a mess of this entry, but-- you know, everything else I might have in my mind is literally swamped by the urgency to have people see this and know about this. There is hardly any other way to describe Attachment Therapy other than torture and abuse, inflicted on children, who had no way to say no or defend themselves.

I've read about this before. What I don't think it mentions on the website (though I might have missed it) is that this "therapy" is attempting to recreated the experience of being born. Which is of course, TOTALLY ridiculous as babies emerging from the womb get plenty of oxygen through the placenta, and their lungs are not functioning yet.

And to boot, there are practices known as Attachment Parenting and Attachment Theory which are entirely different than this strange torture (and are actually quite positive).

This form of therapy is not considered to be part of mainstream psychology either as to understanding of attachment theory, (with which it is considered incompatible[1][2]), diagnosis or treatment, or as to the accompanying attachment parenting techniques. It is distinct from mainstream forms of therapy based on attachment theory as it is primarily based on theories of suppressed rage, catharsis, regression and the breaking down of resistance and defence mechanisms. It has been described as a pseudoscientific intervention, not based based on attachment theory or research that has resulted in in tragic outcomes for children including at least six documented child fatalities.[3] It differs significantly from mainstream attachment based therapies, talking psychotherapies such as attachment-based psychotherapy and relational psychoanalysis or the form of attachment parenting advocated by the pediatrician Sears. Further the form of rebirthing sometimes used within attachment therapy is different from Rebirthing-Breathwork.
